Alfred Michael Martochio

July 4, 1927 ~ May 18, 2022 (age 94) 94 Years Old

Tribute

Alfred Michael Martochio, 94, of Palm Springs, CA, with family by his side, gently passed away on May 18, 2022, to join his loving wife Maria (Tringale, formerly of the West End of Boston), of 52 years. He was a First Generation American, born on the 4th-of-July, 1927 to beloved parents, Alfred & Marion (Cinacola) Martochio in the Boston suburb of Everett, MA.

Known as "Big Al" by his friends and "Benny" by his family. He was a very proud American, serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII & the Korean War (memorably being honored with a hardy handshake from President Truman on board the U.S.S. Sarsfield) and also proud of his Italian heritage & cooking, his Catholic faith, and his 34 year U.S. Postal Service career, retiring as a Lead Supervisor. He was adored by all who knew him, for his contagious warmth, wit, charm and spirit. He moved to Miami, FL, with his parents and sisters as a teenager, then returning to his Greater Boston hometown after leaving the Navy, where he got married and raised a family as longtime residents of Medford, MA. In his retirement years he moved to Chandler, AZ, with his wife Maria, to be near their son Al and his family, until Maria's passing in 2007. He lived very happily in his final years, along with his caring son Michael, in Palm Springs, CA, from the age of 80 to just shy of his 95th Birthday.

"Big Al," was a jazz enthusiast, enjoyed getting out several nights a week, dancing to live bands, and playing skilled poker, often winning many live casino tournaments. He would spend countless nights treating the locals and tourists alike, to memorable jokes, his smooth dance moves and boundless spirit. Many of them would return over the years hoping to see him again, and thrilled to still find him in his 90's, out on-the-town. They would always treat him like a local celebrity. He would always strive to improve himself and would spend a lifetime trying to honor the legacy of his deeply cherished and beloved Dad "Fred." Now, almost 60 years after his own father's passing, we honor Al with the very same words inscripted upon his Dad's headstone..."To have known him was to love him!"

He was predeceased by his loving sisters, Eleanor "Skipper" (Ware) and Gloria "Ginger" (Simpson).
He is survived by his children, devoted son Michael A. Martochio of Palm Springs, CA; loving son Alfred "Al" S. Martochio of Chandler, AZ; and daughter Marion F. Martochio & her husband Vincent Lorusso of Warwick, RI; the mother of his grandchildren, Linda Martochio of Chandler, AZ; adoring granddaughters, Jaclyn (Martochio) & her husband Zack Zickefoose of Denver, CO; and Jaime (Martochio) & her huband Joseph Limon & great-granddaughter Bella Limon of Chandler, AZ. Also, survived by many loving cousins, nephews, nieces & their families. He will be fondly remembered.

There will be a Celebration of Life to be scheduled at a later date.
