Arkie Spoon, 84, of Menifee, CA passed away on January 1, 2022.
Arkie was born April 25, 1937 to George and Zell Spoon in Hot Springs, Arkansas. His family left Hot Springs Arkansas to move to Old Town San Diego when he was a teenager. Soon after he found himself married and a father of three small children. Striving to make a good life for his young family he began driving for the Teamsters. As a born leader he moved his way up in the Teamsters organization to help give a voice to all union members. He became the Secretary Treasurer of Local 36 and was promoted to work for the President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. He always followed his dreams and he encouraged everyone else to do the same.
A source of pride for Arkie was helping to establish the John Lyons Memorial Foundation more than 30 years ago. The foundation was able to raise more than six million dollars for the San Diego Leukemia Society and other charitable causes.
He also enjoyed hobbies of racing cars, flying planes, and collecting antique cars. He loved to attend car shows whenever he could. He spent his free time with family and going on long drives.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy; daughters Sheryl Cantu and Susan Kathan (Craig); son Michael Spoon (Michelle); stepsons Nicolas Morris, William McNichols, and Sean Wahl; grandchildren AJ Cantu (Amy), Wesley Cantu (Lori), Erin Bamford (Robert), Carter Spoon and Allison Spoon; great-grandchildren Alex Cantu, Avery Cantu, Gemma Bamford, and Maddie Bamford.
