The world lost an amazing soul on October 5, 2020 when Marvin Joseph Hayes went to spend eternity with the Lord. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and children. In the days leading up to his passing, he was never alone, which is an amazing thing considering the times we are living in today. He was 90 years old.
Marvin was born to Alfred Clare Hayes and Mary Isabel O’Rourke on September 23, 1930 in Cottonville Iowa. The second born of four children, Marvin lived the farmers life taking care of chickens and harvesting corn. When Marvin was 19 years old, he felt a calling to serve our country in the armed services. He first joined the Navy, where he learned he would not be able to fly, so he shifted his service to the Air Force, where he flew C-54 transports throughout the pacific during the Korean Conflict. While briefly stationed in Hawaii, he met his soon to be wife, Doris Burgard. After Marvin was honorably discharged in 1953, he briefly returned to Iowa to see his family. But after that first winter home, he moved to Los Angeles, California to reconnect with Doris. They were married on October 2, 1954.
Marvin and Doris spent the next 66 years together raising their eight children in Southern California. Marvin was driven by two main ethics – faith and family. As a Catholic man, his faith and family were everything to him. Together with his wife, they brought up a group of people that would take his faith and family orientation into their own lives. Marvin’s family is a rare gem in this world. A family that not only loves each other but genuinely likes spending time together. Holidays are not a hassle nor a burden. They are something to look forward to every year with random excuses to have a BBQ sprinkled in all through the year. This familial unity has sprinkled down through his children and grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Family and faith are always first and that’s what holds you together.
Marvin has now joined his parents, his sisters; Arlene and Dorothy and his daughter, Theresa Anne in heaven. He is survived by his brother Eldon, his wife Doris, his children: Kevin(Sissy), Mike(Lupe), Kathy(Bob), Rick(Alison), Jerry, Celia, Jim and Patty(Dave), his grandchildren: Ginger(Mike), Lisa, Rachel, Jessica(Joaquin), Brianna(James), Michael Jr., Nick, Danny, Amy, Dannika, Lowell, and Owen. And Great-Grandchildren: Rebecca, Ryan, Caitlin, Emerald and Clare; and Great-Great-Grandchildren Ethan, Cameron, Carson, and Chloe.
