Mildred Virginia Jaspering

July 22, 1928 ~ July 7, 2020 (age 91) 91 Years Old

Tribute

Mildred (Millie or Middy) Virginia Jaspering, age 91, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2020.  She was born July 22, 1928 in Spencer, West Virginia to Henry Buell and Lura (Raines) Hughes.

She moved to California in her early 20’s and met and married the love of her life Lloyd Orlando Jaspering who preceded her in death after more than 50 years of marriage.  The Jaspering’s made their initial home in Lynwood, CA with daughter Lynda but later retired to their beloved community of Homeland, CA.

Millie began her career as a switchboard operator and soon thereafter went to work for Bank of America.  Millie was smart, ambitious, and determined and with minimal education achieved becoming a Vice President with the Bank and an account officer for notable corporate business clients.

During her working years, she and Lloyd together acquired many properties and many “treasures.”  She loved collecting, getting her hands dirty, sorting and, most importantly, helping others.   Industrious by design, Millie transitioned to retirement but never ceased to work a full day at something.  Her greatest joy was spending the evening, sitting where she could survey her property.  She would reflect on the accomplishments of the day and plan her to-do agenda for the next day all while enjoying a well-earned beer with her Lloyd and later with whomever might drop by.

When Lloyd was faced with disability, Millie was his steadfast companion and loving caregiver yet managed to somehow “do it all.”

Millie spent her final years at Sun City Gardens (SCG) in Menifee, CA., with regular visits from daughter Lynda and looking forward to the monthly trips her Grandson Jay would make from Maine along with stopovers and outings with other family members.

In the midst of Covid-19, Millie was placed into Hospice care, but was able to remain at SCG which, was a true blessing to be in familiar surroundings with people that knew and cared for her.  Daughter Lynda was able to be with her in her final days and through the wonder of technology, Grandson Jay, Granddaughter Gillian, nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren were able to video conference with her, sing songs, read stories and play music.  She was not alone.

Blessed with a beautiful, successful and fulfilling life, Millie leaves behind a story to be proud of and one to be shared.  She helped so many family members, friends, customers and neighbors that will have forever benefited from her presence.

Predeceased by Millie are her husband, parents, brothers Harry and Bill Hughes and sister Marie Shafer.

Millie is survived by daughter Lynda Loy Wilgus of Menifee, CA; grandchildren Jay Wilgus (Emily) of Kittery, ME and Gillian McAfee (Felix) of Chicago, IL; great-grandchildren, Mia, Cambria and Braya McAfee of Chicago and Jasper and Merick Wilgus of Kittery; sister Mary Lou Thacker and brother Henry Hughes of West Virginia, along with many nieces and nephews that loved her dearly.

She will be remembered by those who loved her as thrifty, crafty, strong, feisty, and wonderfully in love with her home state of West Virginia and her chosen community in Homeland.
